12/4/2020 Dear Families, We were notified by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) that a member of the Mahnomen Public School community has tested positive for COVID-19. It is possible the person was able to spread the disease while in the community on this/these date(s) 11/30/2020. We cannot for privacy reasons share details about the person. At this time, they have been told to stay home and away from other people (in isolation) until they are well and can no longer spread the disease. We have worked with MDH to identify those who were in close contact with the person who tested positive for COVID-19, and have told them directly to stay home and/or to work from home for 14 days, even if they have a negative COVID-19 test during that time. This is how long it can take to show signs of the disease. If you have not been contacted, your child is not considered a close contact, and there is nothing special you need to do. Because the spread of COVID-19 from unknown sources is widespread in Minnesota, you should continue to watch your child for COVID-19 symptoms, which include:  Fever of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher  New cough or a cough that gets worse  Difficulty/hard time breathing  New loss of taste or smell  Sore throat  New nasal congestion/stuffy or runny nose  Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea  Muscle pain  Extreme fatigue/feeling very tired  New severe/very bad headache  Chills If your child gets symptoms, they should stay home and you should talk with their doctor or other health care provider to decide if they need to see a doctor and/or to get tested for COVID-19. Please review the following resources:  Home Screening Tool for COVID-19 Symptoms (PDF) (https://www.health.state.mn.us/diseases/coronavirus/schools/homescreen.pdf)  COVID-19 Attendance Guide for Parents and Families (PDF) (https://www.health.state.mn.us/diseases/coronavirus/schools/attendance.pdf) We understand that this news may make people feel uneasy. We have taken action to clean and sanitize the building and are working closely with MDH to watch the situation. We are asking all members of our community to lower the chance of spreading illness by taking the following actions:  Protect yourself and others by wearing a face covering.  Wash your hands often with soap and water.  Cover your coughs and sneezes; do not touch your face with unwashed hands.  If you are sick, stay home from school, child care, sports, and other activities.  Clean all commonly touched surfaces often, such as telephones, doorknobs, countertops, etc. Resources that you may find helpful:  MDH Coronavirus Disease 2019 (https://www.health.state.mn.us/diseases/coronavirus/index.html)  MDH Schools and Child Care: COVID-19 (https://www.health.state.mn.us/diseases/coronavirus/schools/index.html)  CDC Coronavirus (COVID-19) (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html) If you have questions, contact Ashley Braun, RN Mahnomen School Nurse 218-280-3085. Dear Families/Students/Staff of Mahnomen Public Schools, We were notified by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) of a lab confirmed case of COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) in a member of the Mahnomen Public School community with exposure date(s) of 11/23 and 11/24/2020. We have worked with the MDH to identify those who had close contact with the case, and have communicated with them individually. The risk of exposure for other individuals present in the building on that date is no greater than the risk of contracting the virus in the general community. If you were not identified to have close contact with the positive case you should still monitor for symptoms of illness, but do not need to stay home unless symptoms develop. If symptoms develop, stay home and consult with your physician to determine if medical evaluation is needed. We understand that this may create unease in our community. We have taken action to clean and sanitize the facility and are working closely with MDH to monitor the situation. We are asking all members of our community to minimize the spread of illness by taking the following actions: • Protect yourself and others by wearing a face covering when it is hard to stay 6 feet away from people; washing your hands often with soap and water; covering your cough and sneeze; and avoiding touching your face with unwashed hands. • If you are sick, stay home from child care and other activities. • Be prepared in case you get sick and need to stay home. Keep enough food, regular prescription drugs, and other necessities on hand in case you need to stay home and are not able to go out easily. • Frequently clean all commonly touched surfaces (e.g., telephones, doorknobs, countertops, etc.). If symptoms develop, stay home and consult with your physician to determine if medical evaluation is needed. If you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, MDH recommends: 1. Stay at home for at least 10 days, and for 24 hours with no fever and improvement of other symptoms (Your fever should be gone for 24 hours without using fever-reducing medicine). 2. Use the CDC website on how to Care for yourself at Home with COVID-19. 3. If your household contacts were exposed to you while you had symptoms, they should try to stay home as much as possible for 14 days. This is a challenging time and I know many of you may be feeling stress or anxiety. We will get through this together as a community, and will be stronger when we emerge. Mahnomen School Community Members, This past week the absences in the school population due to COVID related isolation or quarantine have remained similar to the previous week with the addition of 5 more positive cases confirmed. To date we have not recorded a transmission of COVID-19 within the school’s population due to a school related close contact. We believe this is due to the safety procedures that are in place: social distancing, mask wearing, frequent hand washing and disinfecting of frequently touched surfaces. Kudos to our students and staff for their vigilance on these safety practices. Our goal is to keep our students whose families have chosen the in-person/hybrid learning model in those models as much as possible as long as it remains safe for students and staff. Families do have the option of choosing the distance learning model at any time if they are feeling uncomfortable with in-person. We will continue to watch the data closely and as stated in the past it can change rapidly. The school will do its best to give families a few days notice of any transition to a more restrictive model like distance learning but due to the fluid nature of the pandemic that notice may be short. Families need to be prepared and have a plan in place if this happens. The amount of time students spend in school is small in comparison to time spent out of school. Thank you families for following safety protocols at home amidst pandemic fatigue. We ask the entire community to limit their exposure and follow safety precautions. Thank you.

Mahnomen School Community Members, This week the school population continues to have students and staff related absences due to COVID factors. Many of these absences are due to 1st contact quarantines for 14-days per the guidance from MDH and are relating back to last week’s exposure. Multiple new cases of close contact exposures have also occurred from contacts outside the school in the greater community. Thank you to our families for being cautious at home and taking steps to slow the spread. It is critical that parents conduct a health screening of their children daily before they come to school. Mahnomen School Community Members, There has been no reduction in the amount of COVID-19 case counts in Mahnomen County. Please practice safe behaviors: mask-up, wash your hands, practice social distancing and avoid uncontrolled gatherings. This week the school population has had additional positive cases in its population which resulted in multiple close contacts being determined. So far this case has been isolated and the close contacts notified and are in quarantine per the guidance from MDH. Per public health guidance first contacts are in quarantine for 14-days after exposure and can not test out of quarantine. This process may seem overbearing and excessive but the goal is error on safety amongst the school’s students and staff. The data chart in the attached image has been expanded to desegregate data even further by including data specific to absences due close contact or testing. Thank you for being cautious at home and taking steps to slow the spread.

This is especially true when people don’t wear masks and if they don’t stay at least 6 feet away from each other. What starts as one person with COVID-19 can quickly become dozens or more. Take steps to protect your family, your friends, and people you may not even know. Stay away from large gatherings. Wear a mask. Stay at least 6 feet away from other people. Wash your hands. And stay home if you’re sick.

Mahnomen School Community Members, COVID-19 case counts in Mahnomen County continue to remain high. However, this week the case rates associated within the school population of students and staff remains low. Congratulations to our staff, students and their families for following the safety protocols. Those efforts seem to be effective even with the high county numbers around us. The data chart below indicates that on October 29th the school had no active COVID cases and a total of 6 students and staff were out that day due to COVID related issues. Those 6-issues were due to exposures outside of school. Since the start of the school year we have had a total of 15-staff and 113-students miss school due to a COVID related issue such as: a positive case, a close contact and/or waiting on test results. This can change rapidly so please continue to be on guard. Some key safety protocols that mitigate the spread that the school has in place include: ● Maintenance teams are working hard to clean and sanitize with extra steps. ● Following 50% occupancy rate in rooms to keep students in small groups and limiting interaction with other groups. Following 6-foot social distancing guidance. ● Food and nutrition services utilizing additional space to separate students. ● Students are doing an amazing job of keeping each other safe by masking, handwashing, sanitizing and following the additional safety protocols faithfully. ● Bus routes operating with every-other seat empty and sanitizing between routes. ● Families are doing home screenings, keeping their students home when necessary and supporting the efforts that are happening at school. We will continue to work hard to do everything that we can to keep our staff and students safe and in school. The amount of time students spend in school is small in comparison to time spent out of school. Thank you families for following safety protocols at home amidst pandemic fatigue. We ask the entire community to limit their exposure and follow safety precautions. Our goal is to keep our students in-person learning as much as possible while keeping staff and students safe. We will continue to watch the data closely and meet with our response team frequently. Let’s work together to slow the spread so we can keep our kids in school and protect the safety of our staff and students. Thank you for your efforts and please stay safe.

Families and Community Members, The decision to change learning models in school is not easy nor is it a simple process. It is not based upon a single, objective number or data point. So, there isn’t a “magic” number that will determine when a model change needs to be made. Instead, schools must examine and analyze a number of “data points and questions” in making this important decision. Initially, the 14-day rolling average in each county was an important metric schools were directed to use to determine the learning models they should use to start the school year. However, these rolling averages should not be the only metric schools use to determine the need for a model change during the year. The following factors and questions on data points should also be considered to provide information on such a significant decision: 1. What are the positive cases for the District and surrounding area? What are the past, current and future trends indicating? Currently Mahnomen County is trending up in cases. 2. Are we having positive cases in school buildings or are we having first hand and second hand contacts? Each creates very different risk levels and impacts on attendance. Mahnomen Schools has had 2-positive cases to date. 3. Are the positive cases in the area identified in controlled case clusters and traced? Currently most of the cases in Mahnomen County have been identified in controlled clusters. 4. Does the school have the staff to deliver quality education and provide services to students to safely remain open to in-person learning models? To date there has not been significant impacts to school staff exposure. 5. If a school changes to a distance learning model how long is this projected to happen and what changes would need to occur to return to in-person learning? Our goal is to provide consistency for students and families versus changing back and forth between models. 6. What are the negative impacts to students and families by changing to more restrictive learning models? Academic, social emotional, mental health and childcare concerns arise with those changes. Mahnomen School District has teamed up with our local health partners, County Public Health, White Earth Health, and White Earth Emergency Services, and we meet frequently to look at and desegregate this data. These partners are fantastic resources and we work as a team. Despite the increasing numbers in our county, Mahnomen Schools will continue with our current 50% occupancy learning model for the next week. Each week we will review the data with our partners and consider the options. We will continue to follow our safety procedures for those attending in-person learning: 50% occupancy rate, 6-ft distancing, mask wearing, hand washing and disinfecting frequently. Schools are still a safe place for students and employees. Thank you for your understanding.

Dear Families/Students/Staff of Mahnomen Public Schools, We were notified by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) of a lab confirmed case of COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) in a member of the Mahnomen Public School community with exposure date(s) of 10/5/2020. Mahnomen Community Members, Mahnomen County is recently seeing a significant increase in the number of confirmed positive COVID cases. Please practice safe behaviors: wear a mask, practice social distancing, wash your hands frequently and disinfect surfaces to limit your exposure. Even though the number of positive COVID cases in the school population has remained low the rates in the county could mandate changes to the school's current models of operation. Which may require a shift from in-person to distance learning for our students. Please stay safe and help reduce the spread. Thank you.

Dear Parents & Guardians, Mahnomen Schools, along with our partners in Public Health & Safety have a growing concern for the health and safety of the youth in our communities. We have seen an increase in activity related to the possession of and use of marijuana and other illegal drugs within our community. We want to take this opportunity to remind our parents and families that they have a great deal of influence on the choices their children make and we encourage the communication of the dangers related to illegal drug use both here and at home. The Mahnomen School District strives to provide a safe and healthy environment for all of our students. To reduce exposure, increase awareness, and influence positive choices in school the district uses the services of Interquest Detection Canines to conduct random searches of classrooms, lockers, and parking lots. The district also follows a strict policy on the possession of illegal substances to protect students from exposure. There are numerous free resources such as: www.drugfree.org; www.drugabuse.gov to use when communicating these dangers with your children. We believe we share the goal to help our children grow to be healthy adults with our parents and families and Thank you for your positive encouragement of saying "No" to drugs!

Dear Families, Many of you may have heard of the USDA’s announcement earlier this week that free meals will be available again for all school children. In their announcement, USDA states “The flexibilities allow summer meal program operators to continue serving free meals to all children into the fall months.” And “based upon the April data we currently have available, Food & Nutrition Services projects that it could offer this extension, contingent on funding, for the remaining months of 2020.” At this time, we are waiting for guidance from Minnesota Department of Education on whether our school district is eligible for free meals and if so, what the procedure is to begin receiving free meals for our students. MDE’s only guidance to date is that we should continue planning to serve meals to our students under the National School Lunch Program/School Breakfast Program. As of now, your student will be charged for meals based on your income eligibility level. If our district is eligible for free student meals, we will start them as soon as possible. Please keep in mind that if we do have access to free student meals, those free meals will only extend through December 2020 or possibly before that if USDA funding runs out. Once funding runs out, our district will be required to return to serving meals under the National School Lunch Program/School Breakfast Program and your student will be charged accordingly. We do ask all of you to fill out the free/reduced eligibility form whether student meals are free for a time or not. This eligibility form is critical not only to our food service program funding, but could also impact whether we receive USDA equipment grants as well as other school grants, scholarships, and funding. The more free/reduced students we have, the better we can access benefits and additional dollars for all of our students. As soon as we have news as to our next steps, we will be in contact with all of you. In the meantime, we ask your patience as we navigate this bend in the road to the start of our school year. Thank you!

Families of Mahnomen Public School Please use this link - https://bit.ly/3l5DHI7 to view the full Mahnomen School District’s Safe Learning Plan for School Year 2020-21. The goals of the Safe Learning Plan include: safety of students and staff; prioritizing in-person learning, (especially for younger learners) and consideration of transmission risk among different ages. The determination as to which model scenario a school will operate under can change at any time and will be based on guidance provided from local Public Health agencies. Families need to be prepared for a change in learning scenarios within a few days notice. For the start of the 2020-2021 School Year the base learning scenarios are: Mahnomen Elementary: Scenario #1 In-Person Learning Mahnomen Secondary & ALC: Scenario #2 Hybrid (Note: Hybrid Learning guideline is 50% occupancy rate per room (with 6-ft social distancing). It is not 50% enrollment. Based on classroom sizes and low in-person number of students it may be possible to meet the 50% occupancy rate with all in-person students in attendance). Families do have the option of choosing Distance Learning as their learning model. Families that are enrolled should have recently received information in the mail on those options with registration forms. School staff would like to thank you for working with us during this time. Families of Mahnomen Public School As you may have heard, MDE announced Minnesota’s Safe Learning Plan for the 2020-21 School Year. In this plan, individual school districts in consultation with Public Health agencies will have flexibility as to how they plan to start the school year. We will use data on county COVID-19 testing rates over the most recent 14-days to make that determination in mid-August if schools will reopen for the In-Person, Hybrid or Distance Learning model. Flexibility will be critical moving forward. If our area sees a change in COVID-19 cases, we may have to switch between instructional models in a short notice. Families can choose the distance learning model through Mahnomen Public Schools for their students for all,or part, of the 2020-2021 school year. You will be receiving a registration in the near future to indicate your intentions of choice between in-person and distance learning. Over the next few weeks, Mahnomen Schools will continue to work on plan details for each instructional model. We will also provide details to the required safety measures being put in place such as: daily health screenings, social distancing measures, reducing student groups as much as possible, facility sanitation and personal hygiene protocols, face coverings for all and limiting outside visitors to school. Families of Mahnomen Public School This message is to provide a brief summer update on planning for the start of School Year 20-21. As you may have heard, MDE has asked schools to develop plans for return to school during the COVID pandemic. Those plans are to have options for 3-situations: In-Person, Hybrid Learning & Distance Learning. Which method we will start out the year under has not been determined yet. Because of the changes in the pandemic we may be required to transition between each of the different options at anytime during the year. Rest assured that Mahnomen School District staff have been gathering information and resources and is in the process of developing plans for each of these options. Safety for students and staff is a priority of our planning as well as a commitment to providing the best education possible. This pandemic is a fluid situation and we will continue to monitor and adjust to the changes. There will be new expectations and procedures put in place regardless of the option being used. We ask for your patience and cooperation as we work through changes in our school community. Thank you.

Good afternoon Seniors and Families, I wanted to send an update on our graduation plans. First of all, I want to thank you for your patience. I understand the time constraints. This situation we are in has caused a lot of uncertainty and forced us to rethink how we can do a graduation ceremony. We want to do the best we can to celebrate our seniors and we have been working to develop plans within the state guidelines. Those changed as of Friday, and we will not be able to have our graduation either in the gym or on the football field. So, we will be having a drive-up type ceremony. It will be at 2:00 pm on the 24th, the same as our original date. What we know right now is that the ceremony will be limited to one vehicle per senior. Seniors will ride in their vehicle with family members. They will line up at 1:30 in a designated order in the elementary school parking lot. The ceremony will begin at 2:00 and will be broadcast on KRJM. Speeches will be delivered followed by the handing out of diplomas. This will be done with each vehicle driving up to the reception area and the senior getting out to receive their diploma, have their picture taken, and get back in their vehicle. After all of the diplomas have been distributed, we will have a parade of seniors. The parade will follow emergency vehicles and will go through Main Street of Mahnomen, down highway 200, and drive through Naytahwaush to Pinehurst, where the parade will end. In addition, we will be doing individual pre-recording of seniors with caps and gowns walking across the stage and receiving their diplomas. We will also record speeches. These recordings will be put together in a virtual type program that will be shared out electronically. In the event that we cannot hold the drive-up ceremony, this will be the substitute. Guidance Counselor, Sheila Helgeson, will be contacting all seniors to schedule times for students to come in and get gowns, present speeches, and walk across the stage. This will all need to follow social distancing guidelines so each senior will receive a time slot to come in. Seniors will be able to take their caps and gowns after the recording for pictures at home and we are asking for them to be returned right after the ceremony on Sunday. Sincerely, Mr. Hedstrom

Dear Families of Mahnomen Public School Governor Walz recently authorized schools to implement Distance Learning Plans starting Monday, March 30th through May 4th. Please use this web link https://5il.co/e77u to view the full Mahnomen School District’s Distance Learning Plan. This information will also be mailed to all families for those without Internet connectivity. Distance Learning Packets will be sent out weekly on Mondays and picked up on Thursdays. Both will be in conjunction with the school’s meal delivery, via bus route, which will continue 5-days per week. Students are responsible to come out and meet the bus. The school has taken steps to ensure safety and all Packets will be quarantined for a minimum of 3-days prior to leaving the school and after they are returned. Packets will be graded and accepted up to one week late. Teachers will be available 8:30 am to 3:15 pm daily via email and phone to answer questions and assist students with their work. Teacher contact information is included in the educational packet materials. Teachers will also call students every day to check in on progress and record attendance. Additional information from specific programs and student services may also be included in the Packets. Distance Learning has some student expectations: Students will be expected to meet the bus to pick up their packets on Monday of every week and again on Thursdays to return the completed packet. This is no different than meeting the bus to go to school. Students will be expected to contact their teachers if they do not understand the material or need help or guidance in any way. Daily attendance will be based on daily teacher to student contact and completed assignments. Students are expected to complete work and return it for grading credit. School staff would like to thank you for working with us during this time. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any questions. Please remember to view our school webpage and media outlets for information and announcements.

Dear ISD 432 Families: Today, Governor Tim Walz and Education Commissioner Mary Cathryn Ricker announced that all Minnesota public schools will close to students starting Wednesday, March 18, 2020 with the plan to resume instruction on Monday, March 30, 2020. Mahnomen Schools will be in operation Monday and Tuesday, March 16 and 17. This closure is to give staff time to plan for providing educational services in the event of a longer school closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We will also be using the time to deep clean the school and buses. IF you are a member of the emergency services profession (law enforcement, fire department, EMTs, etc.) and/or the medical profession (direct care staff) that has elementary school aged children and do not have child care options, please contact the school Monday or Tuesday, May 16 and 17. We will make arrangements to provide supervision for your children during what would be regular school hours. In addition, all after-school programs, extra-curricular activities, community ed, and school events through March 30th have been cancelled. Please remember the basics for prevention: thorough and frequent hand washing, covering sneezes and coughs, cleaning frequently touched surfaces, practicing social distancing (maintain a 3 – 6 foot separation between you and others) and staying away from large gatherings of people. If your child is feeling ill and has flu-like symptoms please keep them home from school. As more information is made available, we will post on our website, on Facebook and through the School’s App. Please keep the school updated with current phone number and address to receive updated information. Thank you, Jeff Bisek, Superintendent

K-3 students from Mahnomen Elementary participated in the Kids Heart Challenge on Friday February 14th. The Kids Heart Challenge is a fun and exciting event where students learn about their heart while helping others by raising money for the American Heart Association. Students had a chance to participate in an obstacle course that taught them about the different parts of the heart. The top three fundraisers were Adalyn McCollum (Kindergarten), Annbelle Lewis (2nd Grade), and Mikalynn Miller (1st Grade)

As a precaution the school will start the day in a soft lock-down. During the night the hospital received a phone threat of violence. Law enforcement is investigating the situation and its credibility. There will be extra law enforcement presence around the school/hospital area as well. Soft Lock-down means the exterior doors and interior doors will be locked throughout the day and outside activities limited. Thank you for your patience.
