Dear Families, Many of you may have heard of the USDA’s announcement earlier this week that free meals will be available again for all school children. In their announcement, USDA states “The flexibilities allow summer meal program operators to continue serving free meals to all children into the fall months.” And “based upon the April data we currently have available, Food & Nutrition Services projects that it could offer this extension, contingent on funding, for the remaining months of 2020.” At this time, we are waiting for guidance from Minnesota Department of Education on whether our school district is eligible for free meals and if so, what the procedure is to begin receiving free meals for our students. MDE’s only guidance to date is that we should continue planning to serve meals to our students under the National School Lunch Program/School Breakfast Program. As of now, your student will be charged for meals based on your income eligibility level. If our district is eligible for free student meals, we will start them as soon as possible. Please keep in mind that if we do have access to free student meals, those free meals will only extend through December 2020 or possibly before that if USDA funding runs out. Once funding runs out, our district will be required to return to serving meals under the National School Lunch Program/School Breakfast Program and your student will be charged accordingly. We do ask all of you to fill out the free/reduced eligibility form whether student meals are free for a time or not. This eligibility form is critical not only to our food service program funding, but could also impact whether we receive USDA equipment grants as well as other school grants, scholarships, and funding. The more free/reduced students we have, the better we can access benefits and additional dollars for all of our students. As soon as we have news as to our next steps, we will be in contact with all of you. In the meantime, we ask your patience as we navigate this bend in the road to the start of our school year. Thank you!
Parents/Guardians for the safety of our children please follow the drop-off pick-up procedures when bringing your child to school. School starts at 8:30 and dismisses at 3:15. Those that drive to school will enter through Swimming Pool Door #15. Due to COVID transportation restrictions students that are transported by bus will be limited to their primary assigned route. The school will not issue bus passes to another bus. Parent/guardian will need to make arrangements for different transportation. Thank you for your cooperation!

Families of Mahnomen Public School Please use this link - https://bit.ly/3l5DHI7 to view the full Mahnomen School District’s Safe Learning Plan for School Year 2020-21. The goals of the Safe Learning Plan include: safety of students and staff; prioritizing in-person learning, (especially for younger learners) and consideration of transmission risk among different ages. The determination as to which model scenario a school will operate under can change at any time and will be based on guidance provided from local Public Health agencies. Families need to be prepared for a change in learning scenarios within a few days notice. For the start of the 2020-2021 School Year the base learning scenarios are: Mahnomen Elementary: Scenario #1 In-Person Learning Mahnomen Secondary & ALC: Scenario #2 Hybrid (Note: Hybrid Learning guideline is 50% occupancy rate per room (with 6-ft social distancing). It is not 50% enrollment. Based on classroom sizes and low in-person number of students it may be possible to meet the 50% occupancy rate with all in-person students in attendance). Families do have the option of choosing Distance Learning as their learning model. Families that are enrolled should have recently received information in the mail on those options with registration forms. School staff would like to thank you for working with us during this time. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any questions. Please remember to continue to view our school smartphone app, Facebook and website for information and announcements.

Families of Mahnomen Public School As you may have heard, MDE announced Minnesota’s Safe Learning Plan for the 2020-21 School Year. In this plan, individual school districts in consultation with Public Health agencies will have flexibility as to how they plan to start the school year. We will use data on county COVID-19 testing rates over the most recent 14-days to make that determination in mid-August if schools will reopen for the In-Person, Hybrid or Distance Learning model. Flexibility will be critical moving forward. If our area sees a change in COVID-19 cases, we may have to switch between instructional models in a short notice. Families can choose the distance learning model through Mahnomen Public Schools for their students for all,or part, of the 2020-2021 school year. You will be receiving a registration in the near future to indicate your intentions of choice between in-person and distance learning. Over the next few weeks, Mahnomen Schools will continue to work on plan details for each instructional model. We will also provide details to the required safety measures being put in place such as: daily health screenings, social distancing measures, reducing student groups as much as possible, facility sanitation and personal hygiene protocols, face coverings for all and limiting outside visitors to school. This pandemic is a fluid situation and the school will continue to monitor and adjust to the changes. We continue to ask for your patience and cooperation as we work through changes in our school community. Please monitor our School App, website and Facebook page for more announcements and details.

Good afternoon Seniors and Families, I wanted to send an update on our graduation plans. First of all, I want to thank you for your patience. I understand the time constraints. This situation we are in has caused a lot of uncertainty and forced us to rethink how we can do a graduation ceremony. We want to do the best we can to celebrate our seniors and we have been working to develop plans within the state guidelines. Those changed as of Friday, and we will not be able to have our graduation either in the gym or on the football field. So, we will be having a drive-up type ceremony. It will be at 2:00 pm on the 24th, the same as our original date. What we know right now is that the ceremony will be limited to one vehicle per senior. Seniors will ride in their vehicle with family members. They will line up at 1:30 in a designated order in the elementary school parking lot. The ceremony will begin at 2:00 and will be broadcast on KRJM. Speeches will be delivered followed by the handing out of diplomas. This will be done with each vehicle driving up to the reception area and the senior getting out to receive their diploma, have their picture taken, and get back in their vehicle. After all of the diplomas have been distributed, we will have a parade of seniors. The parade will follow emergency vehicles and will go through Main Street of Mahnomen, down highway 200, and drive through Naytahwaush to Pinehurst, where the parade will end. In addition, we will be doing individual pre-recording of seniors with caps and gowns walking across the stage and receiving their diplomas. We will also record speeches. These recordings will be put together in a virtual type program that will be shared out electronically. In the event that we cannot hold the drive-up ceremony, this will be the substitute. Guidance Counselor, Sheila Helgeson, will be contacting all seniors to schedule times for students to come in and get gowns, present speeches, and walk across the stage. This will all need to follow social distancing guidelines so each senior will receive a time slot to come in. Seniors will be able to take their caps and gowns after the recording for pictures at home and we are asking for them to be returned right after the ceremony on Sunday. Sincerely, Mr. Hedstrom
Last week Governor Walz extended the school closure for the remainder of the 2019-20 School Year. As part of his executive order teachers are to use May 1st and May 4th as planning days for the continuation of Distance Learning. Meals and learning packets will continue to be delivered those days however, teachers will not be calling students those 2-days to check attendance. Thank you for your support and cooperation.
Due to the extended school closure the MSHSL has canceled all spring sports and activities.
Today Governor Walz announced that schools will remain closed and Distance Learning will take place for the rest of the 2019-20 School Year. This is an unfortunate circumstance and we miss the daily face-to-face interactions with our students. The school staff will continue to work with students and families to provide the best possible instruction for Distance Learning during this unprecedented time. Thank you for your cooperation and effort.

Dear Families of Mahnomen Public School Governor Walz recently authorized schools to implement Distance Learning Plans starting Monday, March 30th through May 4th. Please use this web link https://5il.co/e77u to view the full Mahnomen School District’s Distance Learning Plan. This information will also be mailed to all families for those without Internet connectivity. Distance Learning Packets will be sent out weekly on Mondays and picked up on Thursdays. Both will be in conjunction with the school’s meal delivery, via bus route, which will continue 5-days per week. Students are responsible to come out and meet the bus. The school has taken steps to ensure safety and all Packets will be quarantined for a minimum of 3-days prior to leaving the school and after they are returned. Packets will be graded and accepted up to one week late. Teachers will be available 8:30 am to 3:15 pm daily via email and phone to answer questions and assist students with their work. Teacher contact information is included in the educational packet materials. Teachers will also call students every day to check in on progress and record attendance. Additional information from specific programs and student services may also be included in the Packets. Distance Learning has some student expectations: Students will be expected to meet the bus to pick up their packets on Monday of every week and again on Thursdays to return the completed packet. This is no different than meeting the bus to go to school. Students will be expected to contact their teachers if they do not understand the material or need help or guidance in any way. Daily attendance will be based on daily teacher to student contact and completed assignments. Students are expected to complete work and return it for grading credit. School staff would like to thank you for working with us during this time. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any questions. Please remember to view our school webpage and media outlets for information and announcements.
