Andrea Simon selected for Mahnomen superintendent position
Mahnomen, MN—
The Mahnomen School Board has selected Andrea Simon to
serve as the school district’s next superintendent.
Andrea Simon is the assistant principal in Waubun, Mn.
Simon is scheduled to begin on July 1, 2025.
A missed school day is a lost opportunity for students to learn.
Students who attend school regularly have been shown to achieve at higher levels than students who do not have regular attendance.
A recent study looking at young children found that absenteeism in kindergarten was associated with negative first grade outcomes such as greater absenteeism in subsequent years and lower achievement in reading, math, and general knowledge.
Poor attendance has serious implications for later outcomes as well. High school dropouts have been found to exhibit a history of negative behaviors, including high levels of absenteeism throughout their childhood, at higher rates than high school graduates.
These differences in absentee rates were observed as early as kindergarten, and students who eventually dropped out of high school missed significantly more days of school in first grade than their peers who graduated from high school. In eighth grade, this pattern was even more apparent and, by ninth grade, attendance was shown to be a key indicator significantly correlated with high school graduation.
Any absence, whether excused or not, denies students the opportunity to learn. These are only some of the comments on attendance from the National Center of Education Statistics.
Parents, if you child will be absent you need to call the school by 9:00 AM to report your child absent for the day. Otherwise, you will get a call from the school. And remember, absences are unexcused unless the school receives an excuse from the parent. The number to call is 218-935-2212 Ext. 244

Mahnomen Public Schools is switching to E-Learning today, Thursday, December 19th. School buildings are closed students and parents refer to the E-learning plan on the website.

Section 8A Football Champions!
The public and parents of American Indian students and Tribal officials are invited to attend the Mahnomen School District’s fall Federal Programs Hearing Meeting on Monday, October 21, 2024 at 7:00 p.m. in the High School Library.
This meeting is open to the public to provide information and seek input on District Federal educational programs (including, but not limited to): Title I, Title II, Title VI, and Title VII-Impact Aid programs.
Next week, October 7-11th is Homecoming week! Ms. Fanning & the Student Council are excited to announce their dress-up days of the week to celebrate!

Our students are reviewing School Bus Safety this week! Learning together, we share some School Bus Safety Tips for Motorists as well:
-Motorists must stop at least 20 feet from a school bus that is displaying red flashing lights and/or its stop arm is extended when approaching from the rear and from the opposite direction on undivided roads.
-Red flashing lights on buses indicates students are either entering or exiting the bus.
-Altering a route or schedule to avoid a bus is one way motorists can help improve safety. In doing so, motorists won’t find themselves behind a bus and as a result, potentially putting children at risk.
-Watch for school crossing patrols and pedestrians. Reduce speeds in and around school zones.
-Watch and stop for pedestrians — the law applies to all street corners, for both marked and unmarked crosswalks (all street corners) — every corner is a crosswalk.
